Understanding the Cost of Living in Belize
Belize offers a unique combination of English-speaking culture, Caribbean coastline, and relatively affordable living that makes it one of the most popular retirement and relocation destinations in Central America. The cost of living varies significantly depending on where you choose to settle.
Tourist and coastal areas like San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), Placencia, and Caye Caulker command the highest prices — expect to pay 30–45% more than the national baseline for rent, groceries, and dining. These areas cater to a tourist economy where many goods are imported by boat, adding to costs.
Inland and northern towns like San Ignacio, Corozal, and Belmopan offer dramatically lower costs. San Ignacio has a thriving Saturday market with local produce at Belizean prices, and Corozal's proximity to the Mexican border means access to Chetumal's retail options. Many retirees on the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program choose these areas to stretch their income.
The Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar at 2:1 (BZ$2 = US$1), making currency conversion straightforward. This calculator shows both currencies so you can plan in whichever you prefer.
